Author Interview – Devorah Fox
Tell us about your story in the upcoming Magic Unveiled anthology, and why it’s going to affect readers?
In Blackwing, a man stumbles upon a pencil that may have been one used by a famous writer. I think we all have a “lucky charm,” and I hope the story will reawaken in readers that spark we experience when we feel that we’ve been imbued with a special power.
What’s your definition of magical realism (as a genre)? What gives it a unique quality?
To me, magical realism is the belief that magic isn’t fantasy, it isn’t otherworldly, and it doesn’t have to be frightening. It’s part of our world. Most of the time, we are oblivious to it. But once we open our eyes, we see it all around us, every day, and we’re richer for it.
What was the most difficult part about writing or fine-tuning your story?
I wanted the reader to suspect that the pencil and notebook in the story were special without coming right out and identifying them as such.
What are the benefits to producing an anthology with other authors?
I love the energy that builds because so many different talents contribute to the same project. It’s just a delight to start with one theme and see the variety of stories that result.
If you could choose to be a character in your short story, you would be…
I’d be one of the young women reading at the poetry slam. But I’d probably eyeing Steve Shupa and wishing that he would invite me to join him for a drink.
Pick two of your co-authors to have over for dinner. Why?
I’d invite Alice Marks because I could probably get her to do the cooking. And H. M. Jones, so I could get a good look at her tattoos.
Would you rather have immortality or immense power (financial, political)?
I’m going for immortality. That would be the only chance I’d have of finishing all my works-in-progress.
What can we expect next from you?
Shortly I plan to launch “Detour, A Big Rig Thriller,” a novel about a trucker who stumbles onto a plot to endanger a U.S. president. I also have a Fantasy story slated to be published in a forthcoming issue of Fiction: Silicon Valley, a literary magazine. “The One That Got Away” is a fish story, told from the point of view of the fish.
