Not only do I love writing books, I also enjoy reading them and discussing them. Seattle Times Bestselling (and award-winning) author Raven Oak is one of my partners-in-crime for the upcoming Magic Unveiled anthology.
I’m so glad I had the opportunity to share this interview with you (and PLEASE check out her awesome books!).
Author Interview – Raven Oak
Tell us about your story in the upcoming Magic Unveiled anthology, and why it’s going to affect readers?
“Mirror Me” is a chance to see what it’s like to walk through a world of mirrors. What if every face you saw was your own? Every homeless person begging for change? Every drug addict seeking relief? Every murder victim wore your face? How could you function in the world, let alone as a homicide detective? Read the story to find out and find a new way to view the world.
What’s your definition of magical realism (as a genre)? What gives it a unique quality?
I’ve heard people call it the literary fiction of urban fantasy, while others say it moves past the supernatural of urban fantasy and delves more into the idea that magic is mundane. It’s normal for some people who move through our world. I view it as a mix of both definitions myself.
What was the most difficult part about writing or fine-tuning your story?
I ended up with emergency gallbladder removal surgery just as I was finishing the story, which definitely made it difficult at times to edit! It was still a great experience and so far, the beta-readers have said a great story.
What are the benefits to producing an anthology with other authors?
I think it helps encourage us all to promote the anthology since its success is partially dependent upon us. In makes it a labor of love worth the labor.
If you could choose to be a character in your short story, you would be…
Honestly, I don’t think I’d want to see the mirror the way my main character does. As interesting as it could be, there’s a bliss in our ignorance. But I love his Mom!
Pick two of your co-authors to have over for dinner. Why?
I’ve been in another anthology with H. M. Jones so I would love to have dinner with her. Also with [you] since [you] brought this together.
Would you rather have immortality or immense power (financial, political)?
Immortality hands down–as long as my husband had it with me.
What can we expect next from you?
I’m also in another anthology (with H. M. Jones), also out October 2016, entitled Untethered: A Magic iPhone Anthology. Lots of crazy phones, apps, and bucket-loads of humor. Book II in the Boahim Trilogy, Amaskan’s War, is also due out in 2017 (Grey Sun Press).
Where can readers find out more about your books?
AMASKAN’S BLOOD Fantasy novel of political intrigue, lies, & suspense.
JOY TO THE WORLDS Mysterious Speculative Fiction for the Holidays.
