So I got my hands on a review copy of The Soul Stone by Jamie Marchant and wanted to share about it with you! Since today is release day, I’m going to jump into my thoughts on the book. I hope you enjoy 🙂
Review: The Soul Stone
The Soul Stone is an artifact of great magic, deep history, and wild power.
So, when you have something like that in the world, you know there will be those willing to use it for their own ends, and those who will do anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. The priestesses of Korth are responsible for keeping the evil power within the Soul Stone contained–but they’re being persecuted. So who’s going to keep the Soul Stone in check and keep everyone safe?
Our heroine, Queen Samantha, knows she has to protect the realm, not only from enemies without, but also those among her own court who would love nothing more than to depose her: they question her heritage, her choice in consort/spouse, and some of her decisions.
Ouch.
But she has the greatest healer and sorcerer by her side–Robrek (aka Robbie), whom she loves and wants to remain with her. Together, they’re going to have to fight hard to keep the throne and the realm together.
I must say that I enjoyed the relationship between Samantha and Robbie. They had their bumps and arguments, and even moments of weakness or imperfection. Just because they were “the good guys,” didn’t mean they walked around smiling and hi-fiving each other all the time. Sometimes they yelled at each other, got angry with each other, and they needed to work things out. This gave a very human touch to both Samantha and Robbie.
The magic was interesting and solid, and I was very intrigued by the class system of the society (the political alliances and interferences of the priestly class, for example).
Although sometimes I wanted to take our dear Robbie and shake him by the shoulders, I did appreciate his growth throughout the story. Oh, and did I mention Robbie’s horses which are imbued with certain awesome gifts or abilities? Very unique and cool!
If you’re a fan of fantasy or epic fantasy set in a court of queens, lovers, backstabbings and intrigue, this is definitely worth checking out.
