Let’s Talk 11.22.63
It’s good to be back!
While I’m still in a bit of recovery from childbirth, I’m at least able to make a blog post while free of pain medicine-induced ramblings 🙂
So, although 11.22.63 aired back in February, I just started watching it last week–and I was blown away. As most of you probably already know, the premise is time travel. A recently divorced English teacher, Jake Epping, is led by his friend Al to go through a time portal in a closet inside Als’ diner.
A portal in a closet? Seems a little meh at first, but from the beginning, you feel for Jake (and I love the sad but powerful opening with one of his students), and he has just enough skepticism to keep us nodding our heads while simultaneously hoping he’d go on this crazy mission Al asks him to complete–hang out in September 1958 onward and save John F. Kennedy’s life before the assassination takes place on 11.22.63.
Al gives an impassioned plea as to why altering time and history as we know it is important–lives could be saved, our country could be headed on a much more successful trajectory. But obviously, when you play around with time, it comes back for you. Time itself is almost its own character in this show, pushing back at our protagonist and sabotaging his plans, and even seemingly speaking through proxies, who utter to him, “You shouldn’t be here…”
It was fun to watch! The dialogue was great, I enjoyed Jake’s adjustment and reactions to 1950s/1960s life (such as eating food that tasted like real food, purchasing goods at ridiculously low prices, wearing a suit and hat, etc.). The tension and suspense were awesome as well, and there were definitely some interesting twists.
This is one of my favorite new shows! And, besides…TIME TRAVEL!!!
Ever since I contributed to the Masters of Time sci-fi/fantasy anthology, I’ve been gobbling up time travel stories and movies. It’s amazing how people can come up with creative ways to present time travel and its complexities. If you haven’t yet read Masters of Time, I encourage you to snatch it up for only 0.99¢. It’s packed with stories from Amazon and USA Today bestselling authors, and award-winning authors. Links are below!
